The Controversy - Abstinence Only Education vs. Comprehensive Sex Education

Some people are opting for Safe Sex Education for our youngsters as opposed to Abstinence Only Education.  The funding for Abstinence Only programs was recently removed from the 2010 budget.  However, when setting the funding for all inclusive sex education programs, abstinence programs were temporarily restored by the Senate Finance Committee.

Why?

Some think that it is more of a reality that young people are going to experiment with sex regardless and they should be prepared.  That sounds logical.  Or does it?

The standard has to be set for young people.  Some will rise to the standard and others will not.  Do we sacrifice the opportunity to tell our young people that they are worth waiting for?  Or do we simply accept the notion that they are going to do "it" anyway and pass out condoms?

Oftentimes, we don't give our youth much credit for being able to make critical decisions.  Oftentimes, we overlook the reasoning behind some of their seemingly inappropriate choices.
